Haikyuu!! is quickly becoming one of the most loved sports anime to ever exist. This series is primarily based on a high school setting. The show reminds various fans of legendary sports series like Slam Dunk. The premise of the show follows a sharp-eyed teenage girl named Hinata Shoyo. Hinata is petite compared to other volleyball hopefuls. But he doesn’t let his height stop his dreams. The main reason for this is that he is inspired by a player nicknamed “Little Giant” from Karasuno Highschool. He soon meets people like Kageyama Tobio and joins Karasuno High School to achieve his dreams. Here, we see some iconic moments when Hinata and Kageyama together become the ‘deviant duo’.
Kageyama Tobio is one of the most badass characters in Haikyuu. He is initially considered to be a very scary and mean person. Kageyama, during the beginning of the show, did not take his teammates into account. He was nicknamed the “King of the Court”. After joining Karasuno Highschool, he is determined to work on his flaws and improve himself. Kageyama recognizes Hinata’s inner talent before anyone else and goes on to form a terrifying partnership with him. Both characters see each other as rivals, but they also learn to trust each other. We are about to discuss some of Kageyama’s best moments below.
1. Kageyama’s advice to Hinata after the first match
This interaction between the two characters sets the tone of the show. This comes after Hinata’s high school team loses terribly to Kageyama’s team in volleyball. Kageyama doesn’t take pity on Hinata and tells her that she needs to stay on the court to fight. We can’t forget this moment as it establishes that the character is extremely arrogant and cool. He says confidently, “Only the winner stays on the court…game one, game two, playoffs, nationals…I’m going to win them all!”

2. Motivate Asahi not to give up
Tobio is not famous for being the best team player in the game. But towards the end of the first season, we see him actively make a big change in himself. Gradually he understands that to play volleyball you have to work as a team. When Karasuno’s ace Asahi keeps blaming himself for losing a game, Tobio encourages him not to be hard on himself. This scene has earned one of the most popular quotes in the series: “You don’t win alone. That’s how it is.”
3. “As long as I’m here, you’re invincible!”
This dialogue from Tobio Kageyama to Hinata is one of the most memorable scenes in the show. When Hinata feels very discouraged about his abilities during Season 1, Tobio encourages him not to give up hope. But being a classic Tobio, he mainly congratulates himself while trying to cheer up his partner. This scene sends chills down the viewer’s spine. As we establish here how deep the relationship of the two characters is with each other. This scene is so iconic that in later seasons Hinata himself repeats the same dialogue to reassure Tobio.

4. Overturned shot against Oikawa
If Tobio is considered as “The King of the Court”, Hinata calls Oikawa the “Great King”. Oikawa used to be Tobio’s last year in high school. They are both excellent ushers, but Oikawa doesn’t recognize Tobio as his equal. Karasuno loses an important match against Aoba Johsai at the end of the first season. This incident increases Karasuno’s will to win. Tobio tries his best during the match, but this dunk is an unforgettable moment. Oikawa is devastated during this scene and is forced to accept Tobio as his equal.

5. Face lock against Jozenji
Other players often make fun of Hinata’s blocking skills in volleyball. And Tobio also joins this party. He always seems like a more serious person than Hinata. But in reality, Tobio is just as passionate about volleyball as his partner. We can see many silly aspects about Tobio. Some of them include him always doing little competitions with his rivals and being absurdly bad at math. But the one that probably stands out the most is his face lock. During the match against Jozenji, Tobio uses his face instead of other body parts to block the incoming ball. This scene is one of Kageyama’s funniest yet iconic moments.
6. National training camp selection
We tend to sometimes forget what a great player Tobio is thanks to Hinata. Since Hinata is the protagonist of the show, our attention is mainly directed towards him. But the show’s writers remind us how amazing Tobio is with this scene. This training camp is intended for the most talented players in Japan. Tobio is selected as one of the best players in the country. While some of his peers cheered him on, others felt left out. Hinata was one of those people who felt that way. And Tobio also took this opportunity to rub it in his rival’s face. This is one of Kageyama’s most iconic moments.

7. Rare first hit against Dateko
We all know that Tobio Kageyama and Hinata Shouyo have an iconic partnership in the series. One of the main reasons for its popularity is the famous “freak attack”. In this attack Hinata jumps as high as possible and Kageyama puts the ball directly into Hinata’s hands. This attack occurs so quickly and unpredictably that it is also called a “fast attack.” This was a pair that was meant to be, as Kageyama is someone who wants to play fast, while Hinata is eager and athletic for every set. Watching the two of them always leaves us in awe, but the one against Dateko feels like a real breakthrough for the pair.
8. You can fly even higher
This scene shows one of Tobio’s softer sides. Hinata’s greatest strength is her high jumps. But his confidence falters after Kageyama tells him about Korai Hoshumi, who apparently jumps higher than him. And Tobio notices this uncertainty in his partner. He reassures Hinata by saying this dialogue. With the animation quality and music improved, this is one of the Kageyama and Hinata moments that become memorable.

9. Attack on Shiratorizawa
Before this match, both Kageyama and Hinata visit Shiratorizawa. But both are humiliated by Ushijima, the best volleyball player in the prefecture. Regardless, both Hinata and Kageyama introduce themselves to Ushijima Wakatoshi when Hinata states that Karasuno would beat Shiratorizawa and go to Nationals. The best part of this was that Hinata said that they are from the concrete while Kageyama smiles at the stage. As time passes and Karasuno moves on to the prefectural finals, they were ready to play against Shiratorizawa. This match holds a very special space in our hearts as it seemed almost impossible for Karasuno to win this game. Kageyama shows incredible character development in this arc of the series.
10. Fight with Hinata
During the second season of the anime, Kageyama and Hinata develop a very close relationship. As the saying goes, all relationships have their ups and downs. This relationship is also affected when they realize that their fast attacks may not always work. Hinata insists on continuing the attack, while Kageyama doesn’t. The pair learn to be more tolerant in later episodes. This arc shows a very emotionally heavy side of Kageyama.
These iconic scenes are ranked in no particular order. But the audience will surely not forget these scenes any time soon. One of the main reasons for Haikyuu’s massive success is Kageyama. While the character can seem scary at times, his constant willingness to chase his dreams makes him compelling to watch. We wish that Kageyama continues to have such rough moments to upstage.
