Elon Musk and Grimes were a match made on Mars, but here on Earth, I guess that wasn’t enough: Friday, Musk confirmed to page six that their relationship has been ruined or, rather, that the two of them are “semi-separated”, whatever that means. This is sad for the reasons it is sad when someone breaks up, but it is also sad specifically because the Musk and Grimes couple was some of the most entertaining and bizarre news of recent years. As their relationship unfolded against the backdrop of a chaotic Trump administration and then a pandemic, it was nice to have the occasional distraction they provided. Think of everything they gave us in the three short years they were together: that first red carpet appearance at the Met Ball. The time rapper Azealia Banks was (allegedly) trapped in her house. A son named X Æ A-12. So many weird tweets. As a tribute to Grusk, let’s review his greatest hits.
The origin story
Legend has it that Musk and Grimes met on Twitter when Musk slipped into Grimes’ DMs to join. an extremely nerdy pun on artificial intelligence she had done once. This was in 2018, and the two began dating soon after. Page Six broke the news then, too, and before long they were being photographed together at the Met Ball. As strange as the idea of the two was, the view it was even weirder: she looked like a comic book villain at a gala wedding and she looked like a vampire at prom.
“Break up with elon NOW”
As is appropriate for a couple who met via Twitter, that platform is also where some of the most memorable moments of Musk and Grimes’ relationship took place. His fans noted that, as he embarked on his relationship with Musk, he updated his biography to remove the word “anti-imperialist,” a prelude to the many times he would. discuss with fans about Musk’s dealings and how sinister they really were. He never stopped his workers from unionizing, she tweeted shortly after they started dating, and sure, he had donated to the republicans, but that was “the price of doing business” in the US In the last love show, at one point, Musk and Grimes had matching anime profile pictures.
They both had a tendency to respond seemingly randomly to their followers, sometimes getting them in trouble and other times resulting in accidental poetry, such as when a Twitter user wrote to Grimes, “break up with elon NOW”, and she replied , just no.”
That confusing cameo of Azealia Banks
It was during these first heady months of their relationship that rapper Azealia Banks made a memorable appearance in their story. In August 2018, Grimes reportedly invited Banks to stay at Musk’s property, where the two were going to work together on music, but Banks claimed, through a wild series of posts on Instagram Stories, a way she helped pioneerInstead, she ended up trapped there at the Salt while Grimes was busy comforting Musk as he dealt with the fallout from one of his ill-advised tweets. Musk and Grimes have disputed this account, but since the breakup was announced, Banks has been taking a victory lap, writing in (of course) an Instagram story, “Ok girl, can we finally do those damn songs now that apartheid Clyde is out of the way? We were supposed to eat these bitches. “
Grimes later told the Wall Street Journal From these early days he was “just not prepared” for the level of attention his relationship received. “I thought I could go ahead in my funny way, and then you casually reply to someone in a tweet and it’s on Fox News, and you say, ‘Ugh’, you know?”
“It is a fundamental film”
At times, the couple seemed to get used to being in a public relationship. There were a few cases where they delighted their fans and amused the rest of us with their exchanges on Twitter and no one was sued that we know of, like the time in 2019 when he asked if the movie Space jam it was fine and she replied:
X Æ A-Xii
In January 2020, Grimes revealed to the world that she was pregnant from a photoshoot where she was being painted as an alien, which was not unusual for her, but as an alien with a baby bump, which was new.
Elon tweeted erratically throughout the pregnancy, leading to the classic tweet a few weeks before the baby was born that read, “My girlfriend @Grimezsz is mad at me.”
Soon after, their baby was born and they revealed his name. if you can call him by a name, to the world. (Originally X Æ A-12, the name was slightly altered a few weeks later a X Æ A-Xii to comply with California law). True to form, the name reveal didn’t come in an official announcement, but rather in Musk’s responses to random Twitter users. That day, Musk also posted a photo of the newborn edited to make it look like he had tattoos on his face. Typical new dad stuff! When Grimes tweeted an explanation of the baby’s name several hours later, Musk responded with a small correction.
The beginning of the end
Musk continued to cause drama on Twitter after the baby was born, particularly when, less than two weeks after the arrival of little X, he posted to his followers: “Take the red pill.” Grimes’ mother stepped on that time and responded to the tweet: “If your partner went through a difficult pregnancy and delivery in the last two weeks, and you were over the age of 16, would you be talking MRA nonsense on Twitter right now?” She deleted it, but before she did, her daughter liked the tweet.
“I love you, but please turn off your phone”
In late July 2020, Musk tweeted: “Pronouns suck,” a statement many interpreted as transphobic. Soon, Grimes replied to the tweet, “I love you, but please turn off your phone or give me a dall [sic]. I can’t bear the hate. Please stop this. I know this is not your heart. “
Seeing this awkward scene in public was kind of weird. Here was one of the richest men in the world tweeting as a teenager, and his alternative pop star girlfriend, who gave birth to their baby boy two months earlier, was asking him to stop in public. She had defended her behavior in the past, but she seemed – I say speculatively – to be at a breaking point.
Their relationship lasted yet another year and changed. Most of them were publicly silent for the rest of the time. One exception occurred in May 2021, when Musk organized Saturday night live and Grimes appeared in a sketch with him, playing the character of Super Mario Princess Peach for his Wario.
As recently as the summer, they continued to respond to others’ jokes and musings about death on Twitter.
I particularly liked it when Musk tweeted, “Free Britney” and Grimes replied, “Thank you.” They finally agreed on something! But it must have been too little, too late.
Their last interaction appeared to be when Grimes responded to a photo of a SpaceX launch in mid-August.
As much as I will miss these two suckers, I’m pretty sure Musk will continue to misbehave on Twitter, in entertaining and legitimately destructive ways, and I’m happy for Grimes because he no longer has to waste energy defending. he. Perhaps now you can add “anti-imperialist” to your biography again. Or better yet, get off Twitter entirely.
