ENS reached the milestone of half a million registered .eth domain names

ENS, Ethereum Name Service, is a service that maps Ethereum addresses to human-readable domain names ending in .eth, such as vitalik.eth instead of 0xd8da6bf26964af9d7eed9e03e53415d37aa96045.

The ENS service is becoming increasingly popular with Ethereum users and others; it has become a trend to display ENS names on people’s Twitter profiles, including those of celebrities like paris hilton.

But nevertheless, US names have much more practical use cases than “flexing” them in Twitter profiles, address-to-name mapping being just one. Other features include reverse mapping, user profile data such as Twitter handles and email addresses, and integration with global Domain Name System (DNS) domain names. ENS .eth names are NFTs.

Half a million registered .eth names

Since the introduction of the ENS token on November 9, domain name registrations have accelerated and now reach 500,000 registered .eth names. The number of registrations more than doubled in November reaching almost 90,000 registrations. December saw more than 109,000 registrations.

In addition to that, more than 632,000 names have been registered in total, including subdomains and DNS names imported into ENS. The latest number is what the ENS team is predominantly looking for, according to a team member and ENS COO. brantly millegan.

“We looked at the total number of names in ENS, including .eth names, subdomains, and DNS names imported into ENS. We also really focus on the number of integrations, as that is how many services actually use ENS. That number is 443 and we are very proud of that,” Millegan says in a Twitter DM conversation with CryptoSlate.

The future is in the hands of the community

The ENS team has great ambitions for the future, now in the hands of the ENS DAO and the broader community that governs the project since the ENS token crash. The token has seen somewhat subdued price action after peaking just days after the $83.4 crash on Nov. 11. From its all-time high, the ENS token is down 66.7 percent, trading at $27.9 at the time of writing.

Dropping the “you were the airdropped liability” line as a commentary to the token price action after the airdrop, Brantly Millegan likes to focus on more important things than money.

“ENS is an attempt at a new Internet protocol and is therefore non-profit, specified with EIP standards, and owned by the community. Our goal is to build something that people will still be using years from now, rather than just hyping short-term playable metrics,” says Millegan.
