Football of the week 5: what to watch

Well, there were a lot of great matchups missing from the college football landscape last week, but I don’t think a single NC State fan is going to complain about that. I know I’m not!

This week has a lot more to offer, so let’s take a look.

We have an ACC showdown on Thursday night. Virginia is not a very good team, but they are playing a Miami team that has been woefully disappointing in games against FBS competition. We’ll also take a look at the last two NFL picks 1.1 on Thursday night, if you’re interested in that. Don’t forget to set up your fantasy lineups!

On Friday, Houston vs. Tulsa looks like it should be a fun offensive game, but both teams have been a bit weak on offense so far. That Iowa-Maryland game will be better, strange as that is to write that. It’s also a bit funny that Sagarin says Iowa is almost a Top 5 team, while SP + doesn’t even think it’s a Top 25 team.

BYU is ranked in the Top 15 of both human surveys, but just barely in the Top 50 of both advanced rating systems. If you’re going to believe in SP + and Sagarin, that’s your team of imposters. However, they will play Utah State this week, so it is doubtful that they will lose.

Saturday kicks off with some great games at noon. Arkansas has been seen as the best Razorbacks team in a decade or more, and they have a chance to prove it in Georgia. Michigan can also prove whether or not it’s real against Wisconsin, although this Wisky team hasn’t been particularly impressive.

Pitt and GT have embarrassing losses to not particularly good G5 teams, but each also has an impressive victory under their belt (Pitt over Tennessee, GT trampling UNC). This will be another good game to establish the hierarchy in the ACC this year. It’s coastal football though, so … [shrug].

Come on, duke!

Louisville vs Wake is a game that will test SP + vs Sagarin. SP + says it’s a close game, Sagarin thinks Wake wins easily.

Cincy vs Notre Dame should be great, by the way. Circle that one for your tailgate clock … at least until Ole Miss vs Alabama kicks in. Ole Miss has looked really good, but they’re playing Bama, who SP + dropped from # 1 (#motivation), and it’s Saban against a former assistant (#woodshed).

This week has to be a must win for Florida State as they are playing Syracuse. Cuse has looked better than anyone expected, including the takedown of Liberty last week, but the rest of his schedule is pretty relentless. If FSU drops this, there will be real talk about Mike Norvell getting the ax sooner rather than later.

Baylor vs OK State, BC vs Clemson, Auburn vs LSU and Arizona State vs UCLA are the night games that interest me the most. The great thing about that BC-Clemson game from NC State’s perspective is that the Wolfpack can benefit from either team winning.

What a state! And go to football!
