New Pixel phones released in the fall are generally released with exclusive software features that will later be available on older Google phones. Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be the first to introduce Material You weather widgets powered by the Google app.
About APK Insight: In this post by “APK Insight”, we have decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see several lines of code within that hint about possible future features. Please note that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. However, we will try to enable those that are closer to completion to show you what they will look like should they ship. With that in mind, keep reading.
As seen in the Pixel 6 marketing and what we have enabled, the Google app is working on two Material You widgets. The first one is pretty straightforward. rounded square It shows the temperature, weather conditions, high / low and the current city.
The most visually interesting widget is the slanted pill with large temperature digits and condition icon. Both are themed with Dynamic Color, with a rather unconventional shape. Google often pairs it with Material your watch in advertising.
According to the latest beta version of the Google app, the two weather widgets will check that your device is a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro before appearing. Google is preparing to support other Pixel phones, but that won’t be the case initially. In the meantime, the widgets will be exclusive to Google devices, and all other Android 12 users will have to settle for the existing home screen icon / shortcut.
Meanwhile, Android 12 is another requirement for weather widgets. So far, the Material You app redesigns appear on all Android versions, but they lack Dynamic Color on Pixel devices not running version 12.
Items on the home screen are not so clear. The vast majority of updated widgets appear in Android 11 and earlier, including those from Google. Calendar and Drive. However, while the X-shaped for quick actions appears in the cloud storage app, Keep’s The widget similarly only appears on Android 12.
Thanks to JEB decompiler, which some APK Insight teardowns benefit from.
