Jujutsu Kaisen began as a story about sorcerers fighting curses. The concept remains the same, but the story has taken a darker and more cruel path. Anyone who has kept up with the manga knows the twists that Gege Akutami has been taking. The long-awaited Shibuya Arch was definitely a masterpiece in many ways, but it was also one of the hardest to beat. We saw several fan favorite characters die. Once the manga had followed this path of darkness, there was no going back, and since then, things have become quite unpredictable. Out of all of them, one of the characters that fans were surprised to see nearly killed during the battle was Nobara Kugisaki. Is Nobara Kugisaki dead? Seeing her unconscious after a fatal battle has fans confused and horrified, wondering if the manga actually did kill an important character.
Gege Akutami has never stopped showing us his bold sense of writing. He killed his own protagonist in the first arcs of the manga and another character (yes, I’m talking about Junpei), in the next chapters. While I admit that I hate watching them die, these are the events that help us see reality. Curses are evil and dangerous beings. Fighting curses is not easy, and death is a very obvious consequence of being involved with them. However, no matter how much you read between the lines, getting over the idea of our favorite characters dying isn’t easy.
Is Nobara Kugisaki really dead? The mystery has been killing fans internally.
Confusion of the death of Nobara Kugisaki
It’s completely insane how Nobara Kugisaki’s state is one of the biggest failures in history so far. We have had several vague directions in history. Gege Akutami has been very adamant about keeping the character’s status a secret. During the Shibuya Arc, Nobara encounters Mahito, and like any other Kugisaki fight sequence, this becomes another fan-favorite moment when the young sorceress gives the deadly curse a hard time. Nobara’s straw doll technique, as already seen during her battle against the cursed wombs, is one for a change. Mahito could never have imagined how much damage Nobara could do until he confronted her.
Mahito literally has to run from her to live, and that’s exactly one of the main reasons we love Nobara. However, towards the end of chapter 124, let your guard down for a moment. She had made sure Mahito didn’t touch her all the time until Mahito created his duplicate, and was trying to find a way to defeat him. In that split second, Mahito ends up touching his eye. Itadori runs towards her as the curse escapes.
The next chapter is followed by Nobara’s flashbacks. In chapter 125, she is seen stabbing her own eye, as she would rather do that than transform. As he does so, he tells Itadori to tell everyone that “it wasn’t too bad.”

Is Nobara Kugisaki dead in Jujutsu Kaisen?
As Nobara lay unconscious, people were hoping that she could have made it. It wasn’t until 20 chapters later that the character was addressed again. In a conversation between Itadori and Megumi, the former asks for Itadori and Megumi responds silently. Itadori’s immediate reaction is one of agony. However, “silence” is too vague an answer to conclude that Nobara is dead. Things seemed a bit clear when Gege Akutami confirmed that Nobara had, in fact, died in chapter 125. He even added that there were no hospitals available in Shibuya when said event occurred. But everything became more blurry when its status was announced as “unspecified”.
The only conclusion that can be derived from these sequences of events is that Nobara actually died during his fight against Mahito. However, she could have come back to life somehow. That’s not entirely impossible, as we saw the same thing happen to Yuji during his fight against Yuta. Yuta killed Yuji but even brought him back using the reverse damn technique. It is possible that Shoko is currently treating her and she is currently in a very critical condition.
Nobara Kugisaki has not been approached since chapter 141. However, we hope that she is alive and will return soon.
