This is our first full conference since the 2019 general election in which we suffered our worst defeat since 1935.
To our devoted activists and loyal voters, I want to say loud and clear. You saved this group from destruction and we will never forget it. Thanks.
But my job as a leader is not just to thank the voters who stayed with us. It is understanding and persuading the voters who rejected us.
To the Labor voters who said their grandparents would be turned in their graves, who couldn’t trust us in high office, to those who grudgingly elected the Conservatives because they didn’t believe our promises were credible.
To voters who thought we were unpatriotic or irresponsible or despised, I say these simple but powerful words. Under my leadership we will never enter elections with a manifesto that is not a serious government plan.
