Germany’s oldest political party, the center-left Social Democratic Party, known by its German acronym SPD, has languished in polls for years. But on sunday elections, the SPD came forward, winning 26 percent of the vote, according to preliminary figures. Center-right Christian Democrats got 24 percent of the vote, the lowest mark for the party since its founding in 1945.
