Square Enix has wrapped up their live show on TGS, which was a pretty solid presentation overall. It also released a new surprise title called Dungeon Encounters, which is directed by Hiroyuki Ito and will feature the ATB (Active Time Battle) system that was pioneered in the Final Fantasy series. It is also coming very soon, with a release date of October 14 for the Switch eShop.
As you can see in the trailer, you’re opting for a minimal, grid-based approach to dungeon crawling. You explore and have to pay attention to the hex numbers, and trial and error is likely the key to clearing each dungeon. It is not just battles that trigger events, as the official website states that each action and collection, such as visiting shops, etc., will also be an “event” on the map.
Square Enix also wants to emphasize the big names behind the project:
Producer: Hiroaki Kato
Director: Hiroyuki Ito
Character Design: Ryoma Ito
Music: Nobuo Uematsu
It certainly seems like an interesting take on the genre; Let us know what you think, as always, in the comments.
