Yankees vs. Blue Jays score: Live updates on the AL wild-card race; Red Sox, Mariners also in action

There are only five days left in the 2021 Major League Baseball season and the race for the American League wild card is reaching its limits. Going into the action Wednesday night, the Yankees held a two-game lead over the Red Sox for first place with Boston clinging to a half-game lead over the Mariners and a one-game lead over the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays take on the Yankees at home Wednesday night, while the Mariners host the Athletics and Red Sox visit the Orioles after losing to Baltimore on Tuesday.

The big head-to-head showdown here is in Toronto, of course. The pitching showdown is excellent too, with Cy Young contenders José Berríos (12-9, 3.48 ERA) and Gerrit Cole (16-8, 3.08 ERA) clashing. Berrios of the Blue Jays took the ball Sept. 9 against the Yankees, working 6 2/3 innings and allowing two runs and five hits with eight strikeouts in a Toronto win. Cole has faced the Blue Jays four times this year, going 2-1 with a 2.74 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in 23 innings. With the Yankees winning Game 1 of this series Tuesday night, the Blue Jays’ backs are against the proverbial wall here.

Here’s a look at the AL wild-card standings coming in Wednesday night, as well as the key games on the schedule.
